Peter and Maria Hoey are brother and sister artists. Since 2008 they have independently produced and published their work under the name COIN-OP.

Coin-Op no.8: Infatuation was nominated for an Eisner Award (2020) in the Best Issue/One-Shot category. Their comic: “Supply Chains” was nominated for an Eisner Award (2019) in the Best Short Story category.

Publishers Weekly calls their latest book, In Perpetuity, a “savvy noir thriller set in the land of the dead.” Their books Animal Stories and Coin-Op Comics Anthology (1997-2017) each received starred reviews from Publishers Weekly. The Bend of Luck earned a star from Booklist.

Their comics have appeared in The Best American Comics, and BAC’s Notable Comics list, at The Society of Illustrators, and in many issues of American Illustration. Their accordion-fold book,The French Drop, is in the Spencer Collection of Illustrated Books and Manuscripts and Fine Bindings at the New York Public Library.

Their comics have won Silver and Gold Medals at New York’s MoCCA Arts Festival (2017, 2018, 2020, 2022), Best Anthology at Denver’s DiNK festival (2019), and ‘Comic of the Festival’ by Broken Frontier at Thought Bubble UK (2019). Their Anthology was named “Comic Collection of the Year 2018” from Page 45 (U.K), and their books have appeared on Fantagraphics Bookstore’s Annual Favorite Comic List (2016, 2018, and 2019) and TCJ’s Best Comics list (2018).

The Hoeys’ early comics appeared in many issues of the influential comic anthology: BLAB!. Their “Little Nemo in Coin-Op Land” comic appeared in the Eisner-winning and NPR 2014 Book of the Year anthology: Little Nemo: Dream Another Dream.

In 2023, their 6 large-scale comics in a series titled: “Market Street Crossroads,” were installed in bus shelter kiosks from The Embarcadero to 6th Street in San Francisco. This public art project was part of the Market Street Kiosk Series commissioned by the San Francisco Arts Commission and the SF MTA
